Meeting Minutes: July 9, 2007
Meeting called to order at 7:45 p.m.
We started with a very entertaining presentation on crime prevention given by Doug Duncan. He gave us some very valuable tips on how not to become a victim of crime. It was such an interesting talk that I didn’t write any of his tips down and now I can’t remember any of them. But luckily I haven’t been the victim of any crimes yet.
Our next meeting is at Golden Corral All You Can Eat Buffet. Be there on August 13 at 7 p.m. with your feedbag on. Yee-hah! I’m even told that there might be some fun games with semi-valuable prizes to be awarded.
We decided that the Christmas party will be at the same place as last year, which is the Unit 1 Clubhouse at the Mainlands on US 19. (Thanks again to Mona Edwards.) We’ll be looking for some volunteers in the upcoming months to help with the Christmas party.
Work will start shortly on next year’s Spring Fling Car Show, so start thinking of any changes that can be made to improve on last year’s show. Start writing down your ideas and comments so you don’t forget them. Also, committee chairpersons from last year’s show such as the parking, judging, games and raffle chairpersons should have some solid ideas on how to make any improvements in their areas of expertise.
Respectfully submitted,
Steve Hansen
Secretary

SMC Hosts Crime Prevention Speaker
Did you know that Florida ranks second in the nation for crime? The Tampa Bay area holds the 38th position in that national statistic. With increased awareness and a few modifications to our behavior, that number can be reduced by nearly 82%.
Doug Duncan from Metro Crime Prevention of Florida was our guest speaker at the July SMC meeting. Doug shared many useful ideas to protect ourselves from identity theft, home burglaries, and criminal activity when traveling near or far.
The number one tool in preventing identity theft is a paper shredder. Doug advises that we use a shredder to destroy all non-important personal documents, including that junk mail we receive daily. Ordering an annual credit report will alert you to any suspicious activity. Your home computer can provide access to your personal information as well. Sophisticated scanners allow “hackers” to access data from computers. Doug suggests that home computers be turned off when not in use and not to store key info on laptops, as they are easy targets.
Most in-home crimes occur during the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. To better protect our homes, Doug recommends using a timer for outdoor and indoor lights, an inconspicous home safe, double-key deadbolt locks, locks for windows and sliding doors, security systems, and “beware of dog” signs.
In addition, Doug offered these helpful hints. While traveling, we should limit the number of credit cards and the amount of cash we carry. At home and in our cars, medical information should be stored in a “File of Life” available to emergency medical staff.

AUTO-biography
The Carroll’s Mustang Adventure
Jim bought his first Mustang in 1980 in San Diego, California. It was a 1966, 6 cylinder convertible, light blue, black interior, no power anything. Shortly after the purchase, he went to Saudi Arabia for four years and the Mustang was in storage. Upon his return from the Middle East, he drove the car to Clearwater, Fl. to use as his daily driver. Jim didn’t know anything about Mustang Clubs or collector cars as of that time. That soon changed, as did a lot of other things, after he met Lucy. Jim joined the Suncoast Mustang Club at their show at the Rubin Icot Center in 1988 and has been a member ever since.
The ‘66 was showing some age, so it was decided to restore it. Not having a clue as to how to go about a project like that, the car was put into the capable hands of Country Auto Body, who did a great job, including returning it to its original Springtime Yellow. Jim and Lucy then began showing the car at every Mustang show they could find.
Jim, having caught Mustang Fever real bad, then purchased a Nightmist Blue ‘66 Fastback GT, 289, 4 speed, with a light blue and white pony interior. Then Lucy got a blue and silver ‘88 Mustang GT convertible. Somewhere in there, Jim and Lucy got married and the yellow convertible found a new home. (No particular connection there.)
It was about that time that Jim was transferred to Savannah, Ga. There was no Mustang Club in Savannah so Jim met with some Mustang owners and started one. The first meeting had 15 people and the second one had 75. Jim was elected the first president and the rest is history. The Savannah Mustang Club has over 125 members and presents one of the most popular annual Mustang shows in the southeast. Lucy joined Jim in Savannah and became very active in the club as well. They have maintained a close relationship with the club over all these years.
Returning to Tampa in 1991, Jim spent the next four years rebuilding a 1954 Ford F-100 Pickup truck. Though not a Mustang, it was entered in many Mustang shows and other open shows throughout the southeast. Somewhere in there the ‘66 Fastback found a new home.
The next project was the restoration of a ‘69 Mach 1, candy apple red, 351, automatic power everything. For the next few years, they showed both the Mach 1 and the truck.
Jim and Lucy have served in several offices in the Suncoast Mustang Club, as well as chairing a few Mustang shows for the club over the years. They are also members of Tampa’s Mustang Club. In 2004 they joined the Great American Pony Drive for a 9000 mile, 9 week journey thru the U.S. and parts of Canada. Since then, they have enjoyed Pony Drives in 2005 through the Midwest in their new ‘05 GT convertible, and in 2006 in California and Nevada, giving them the opportunity to meet “Mustangers” from all over the world.
Their travels have, so far, taken them to New Zealand, Australia, and just recently, to England, Scotland and Ireland at the invitation of friends they met through their Mustang hobby. Jim and Lucy also enjoy sharing their travels with other members of Mustang Clubs.
