A Word From Wayne
Hello again and Happy New Year. I hope everyone had a safe
and happy holiday season. Speaking of holidays, I hope that everyone who
attended this year’s annual Christmas party had a great time. “Special” thanks
go out to Mona Edwards for obtaining the use of the Mainlands Club House for us.
Once again, Mike and his staff from Mike’s Pizza and Deli catered
the food and if I may say so, I thought it was outstanding. We had a shrimp
cocktail platter, bruschetta, Greek and tossed salads, Chicken Sonoma, pulled
pork, wings, and baked ziti along with his famous garlic knots. And for desert
he had pies and tiramisu.
After dinner we had a gift exchange where everyone that brought a gift sat in a huge circle holding the gift they brought. Then I read a modified version of Twas the Night before Christmas. Every time I said the word “right” the crowd passed the gift to the person on the right. Every time I said the word “left”, they passed the gift to the left. It sounds simple, but occasionally as I was reading the poem I would look up to see someone with no gift and some with three. It all worked out, and when the poem was done, you got to open the gift you had in your lap.
The next game we played involved a small group of “volunteers” (Christine Moody, Karen Frank, Angus Reid, Alan Kapell, and Taylor Stockowski) who stood around a card table with a big gift-wrapped box on it. They each took turns rolling the dice in an effort to get doubles. If they didn’t get doubles, the dice passed to the left. If they did get doubles, they could proceed to opening the gift on the table. But the dice continued going to the left, and when someone else got doubles, they had to stop unwrapping the gift and the new person could pick up where the old one left off. It is a very fast paced game. Oh and by the way, after you rolled your doubles, you had to put on a Santa hat, winter scarf, and oven mitts before you could start unwrapping. Believe me, it was quite a sight to see (there are pictures on the website).
The third and final game of the night was our version of the new hit TV show Deal or No Deal. We randomly picked contestants to play against the odds for what turned out to be a very elusive prize. We put 15 numbered boxes on the stage and each one had a dollar amount inside ranging from 1 cent to 100 dollars. The person could pick one of the 15 boxes that they thought the hundred dollars was in and we would set it aside. Then they could open the rest of the boxes one at a time and narrow down the odds as to what was in the box they picked first. Along the way we would try to bribe them to give up with cash or other semi-valuable prizes. All in all, I think we had a good time with good food and great friends. Thanks to everyone who did participate and for those of you who missed out I hope that you can make it next year.
This year’s annual “Toys for Tots” caravan turned out with less people but more gifts than I imagined. A lot of people could not make it this year, but they surprised me by stopping by the shop and donating gifts anyway. We got so many toys that we completely filled three cars with all the donations. We caravaned over to the Brandon Town Center and hooked up with our friends Randy and Dave from WQYK radio and the Marine Reserves. We got some free advertisement on WQYK live radio. The Marines who were running the “Toys for Tots” program were very grateful for our donations. Thanks to all the members who donated gifts. After that, we all went around the corner to the Smokey Bones restaurant and had dinner and even more good times.
As for upcoming events, I hope to see you at the BIG car show at Silver Springs on January 6th-7th. Last year they had over 1,000 cars gathered and this year I hear hey are expecting over 1,300.
The January meeting will be held at Autoway Ford on January 8th at 7:30 pm. Hope to see you there. We are still working out the fine details, but don’t forget to mark your calendars for your annual car show on April 28th. Flyers and more info can be found on the website. This is our annual fundraiser, so everyone please try to attend. I challenge each of you to bring a friend to sign up and attend.

Holiday Party
Thirty-Eight SMC members shared a great meal and a great time at our annual Holiday Dinner. Once again, Mona Edwards was able to provide the club with the use of her neighborhood’s recreation center and Denise Moody created a festive atmosphere with her decorations. “Big Mike” served up a variety of tasty dishes and desserts.
After everyone enjoyed their meals, we had a short business meeting. Wayne reminded everyone that membership dues are due, about the “Toy’s for Tots” drive, and he formally introduced incoming secretary, Steve Hansen. Pres Rice commented on how great the newsletter is and made a motion that dues for the Newsletter Editor be waived, it was seconded by husband Allen, and voted for unanimously by the members attending. Members were also reminded that the January meeting will be at Autoway Ford.
Once the club business was out of the way, Wayne got to live out his fantasy of being “everybody’s favorite game show host”. (We all know this is the real reason he likes being club President!) First was his version of the “Christmas Story – Gift Exchange”. Each member had to actually listen to Wayne as he got all the gifts moving from right to left or whatever … until the end of the story determined who got which gift.
Next was Wayne’s version of Deal or No-Deal (at least no John Wayne trivia this time). Helen Watjen was the luckiest of the contestants, as she walked away with a $50.00 prize. Pres Rice cashed out with $30.00. Christine Moody and Steve Dicenso both won $25.00. Angus Reid and Anne Demmons each left $20.00 richer. There were lots of other prizes ranging from Taylor Stockowski’s gift certificate to Chili’s to Denise Moody’s bag filled with a “lovely” tee-shirt. “Best Sport of the Night” award goes to Connie O’Connor, who after being tortured by Wayne to give up her cash, traded it for a pleasant surprise – which turned out to be a sheet of paper with “a pleasant surprise” written on it. Better luck next year Connie!
All in all, we had a terrific evening with good food, lots of laughs and everyone left richer for the experience of sharing this wonderful evening together. Again thanks to Mona, Denise, Wayne and everyone else who pitched in to make this holiday celebration for our club a great way begin the holiday season.

Participates in the Toys for Tot’s Drive
While our numbers weren’t large, the
Christmas Spirit was for those of us who participated on Friday, December 15th
in our third annual drive to the “Randy and Dave” WQYK radio show with the U.S.
Marine Corps Toys for Tots Drive. Wayne Farnham and daughter Jennifer, Bill
Dellert, Terry & Kelly Worthington, and Karen Frank met at RestomodPLUS for the
drive to Brandon.
Once we arrived at Toy’s R Us, we were met by Joe and June Brend and Jim and Lucy Carroll, who brought out both Mustangs. In addition to the club members’ donations, we had a carload of great toys to share courtesy of Big Mike of Mike’s Pizza, who catered our holiday dinner.
After meeting with the Marines and Randy and Dave from WQYK, (who actually let Wayne talk live on the Tampa Bay airwaves), we unloaded our gifts and headed to Smoky Bones for a meal together. Bill Goodwin and his wife Margaret stopped by to visit at the restaurant. Jim Carroll was the only SMC member to have the waiter do the “Donut Dance”, which wasn’t as spectacular as in the past, but was still interesting to watch. We shared lots of laughs as we enjoyed our barbeque dinner.

SMC Membership Renewal It is once again time to renew your membership to SMC. Dues will remain the same, $20.00 annually. The pro-rated dues are only for new members, not for members who pay later in the year. Along with paying your dues, it is very important that you completely fill out a membership application- even if everything is the same from last year. The applications are important for our records. Also, make sure you check off how you want your newsletter sent to you. Receiving the newsletter via e-mail does save the club money, but if you prefer receiving it by mail, please indicate that on the application. We are an official MCS sponsored club and it is important that we have as many MCA members as possible in our club. Be sure to let us know you belong to MCA (and if you don't belong, please consider joining). You may hand-deliver your application and dues to Bill Dellert at the SMC club meetings or mail to Bill at the address on the application. Please do not send applications to the club's post office box address. All 2006 members will continue to receive the newsletter through March; those who do no renew by that time will no longer be considered active members.

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR MEMBERS
The Suncoast Mustang Club would like to welcome new members Alan and Jessica Kapell. Alan shares alittle about himself…
We are native New Yorkers and lived on West 72nd St. between Columbus Ave & Central Park West for many years. Jessica worked for Chase Manhattan Bank & her job brought us to Tampa in 1992. In 2002 we sold our house & bought a condo in south St Petersburg.
Over the years we have travelled extensively and have seen "most" of the world. We still visit NYC several times a year. Jessica and I enoy theatre, movies, restaurants that offer "seared tuna" and are very physically active. We walk about 3 miles a day at least 4 times a week and I am a 4.0 Tennis player and B+ Racquetball player.

“AUTO-Biography”

As a new feature, we’d like to publish “AUTO-biographies” of our club members’ cars. Each one of us has a story to tell about our Mustang. When and how we got it, what’s been done to it during our ownership, and what future plans may be in store. We are asking club members to submit their “AUTO-biography” for the newsletter. Here’s the first in our new series. Please submit your car’s story to Bill or Judy via e-mail or by US Mail.
Built in Dearborn, Michigan on February 19th, 1965, this Vintage Burgundy Fastback was shipped to Edwards Ford in Wayne, New Jersey. While still on the car carrier, salesman Lawrence Satterfield spotted it and purchased this car as his “demonstrator”. It was a “C” code (289 – 2 bbl carb) with Cruise-O-Matic and it had a radio and heater – that’s it! He drove it about 6 months and sold it to neighbors Pete and Maria King to be Maria’s car.
The Kings moved to Madeira Beach, Florida in 1981 and brought the Mustang with them. As a second car, this Mustang was driven very little and after Maria King’s passing in 1988, the car sat for a couple of years. Peter told his neighbor, George Keller he was thinking of selling it. George, who knew me because of my friendship with his daughter and son-in-law, and he knew I liked Mustangs, having seen my Silver Convertible numerous times, called me and asked me if I was interested in buying this car. I decided to go and have a look. It wasn’t pretty, having been outside for years, but the odometer read 33,709 and it appeared all original except for the paint, so I made an offer and became the third owner of the car.
I drove the car for a couple of years before deciding to totally dismantle it for a complete restoration. It was never in any kind of accident, but water leaks had destroyed the cowl, left front floor panel, and trunk. Once everything but the suspension was removed, it was towed to Seminole Body Shop where it was put on a rotisserie and the suspension was also removed. Over the next few years repairs were made and a new paint job was applied. During that time I was able to do lots of work on the car myself, such as stripping the engine compartment and repainting it and, once repairs were made to the floors, undercoating it. It finally came back to my home sometime in 1997 and it took many years to finally get this car completely assembled and running. I had lots of problems with the assembly of the car and had to send it to Dom Forte’s shop, where Wayne put the windshield and back glass in correctly, hooked up many of the electrical items and got the rebuilt (by me) 289 running. After it came home it was a few more years before this car was finally decent enough to drive. Wayne (now owning Restomod Plus) finished off the air conditioning and some other problems. The car was now starting to become useful. After driving it for a while, Sherman put new rear springs on it and corrected some gauge problems. Dom checked out the steering and corrected some engine problems that he discovered and the car is now starting to become a relatively dependable driving machine.
It is now in what I call the final stage of restoration. Driving it as much as
I can, I am looking for rattles and noises, as well as correcting whatever else
I find isn’t working right. I’m also going to have the scratches and dings I
put in its beautiful paint job repaired, hopefully by the same man who painted
it originally. It now has 37,000 miles on it and will hopefully start doing
“show” duty this year. It is a different car in many ways from the one that Mr.
Satterfield purchased in 1965, since I’ve added practically every option that
could be put on this car; boosting it’s power with a 4 barrel carb and dual
exhausts, adding disc brakes, power steering, and air conditioning, and lots of
little things that we take for granted today but back then were options – like
back-up lights, mirrors etc. Hopefully, it will be at shows in 2007 and will
win many smiles and maybe a few trophies.
