A Word From Wayne

Hello again and Happy New Year.

Once again, here I am telling you about what’s going on in our small corner of the world of Mustangs. For some of you it is just a recap of what we did recently and what’s coming up. For others of you it just informs you of what the rest of us have been up to while you have missed out. I know we are all busy and I know you plan on attending more in the future, but this is a new year and the future is now. Let’s all make a better attempt to attend events and participate. If you want changes in the club, then participate and express yourself. Email me with ideas. Let me know what you want, and if it’s possible we will do it. Now I don’t want to hear “we need more car shows”. I want to hear things like, “I hear they have a show at Burger King every Saturday, and I would like to help organize a trip over there as a group”. That’s what it is all about. Express yourself and participate. I will help as much as I can, but I can’t hear you from where you are sitting now reading this.

As I sit here and reflect on some of the things we have done in the past year or two, I must say that it is pretty hard not to have found something that everyone could enjoy. We have had meetings every month that include such things as interesting places to eat, speakers telling of trips to places many of us will never get to see, tech talks about cars, and even personal security and identity theft. We have been bowling, held small cruise-ins and car clinics, attended car shows and even hosted a show. We have even turned the donation of club money for a charity into an event and dinner out with friends. Not to mention our annual Christmas parties that people talk about for months afterwards. Folks, I am telling you that if you are not an active participant in this club, you are missing out.

Yes, I do think we could do more and that is where you come in. Get up off that couch and get involved and let’s make this club even bigger and better. For those of you who do attend and participate, I thank you. Let’s see if you can help by getting a friend to come out and be a part of some of our activities.

I will tell you all about the Christmas party and the Toys for Tots toy drive at the next meeting. We will have a presentation about this past annual Pony Drive at this month’s meeting. Speaking of the annual Pony Drive, this year it is scheduled to be here in Florida, and I am hoping to see some of us be a part of it.  I will speak more about this in the near future. See you at the meeting.

          SMC Holiday Party

‘Twas a night before Christmas (December 8th to be exact), when all through the Maitlands no people were stirring, not even dogs, cats, birds, mice.  I mean nothing!

But, in the clubhouse decorations were hung by the ceiling with care, in hopes that the members of the Suncoast Mustang Club would somehow find their way there!

The tables were set with holiday cheer - decorations hand-made by our own Denise Moody, here-here!

One by one and two by two, members drove through the night with anticipation of what lay ahead, while visions of food prepared by Mike’s Pizza, danced in their heads.

When out in the parking lot there arose such a clatter.  Mustang club members were arriving.  Residents were asking, "What was the matter?".

As we sprang from our cars, our hearts skipped a beat, as we all joined for the annual treat.

Away to the evening we did party and what to my wondering eyes should appear...but Wayne with games and presents just as he does every year!

When onto the night there arose such a fuss with members joining in on the games that went like a flash.   Some ending up with great prizes and others with trash!

With a smile and a speech - no sign of despair -Christmas presents were shuffled, and I knew in a moment that mine would be there!

As the evening came to an end, members were heard to exclaim as they drove out of sight, "Season's Greetings" to all” and we'll see you Monday night!

Now dash away, dash away, dash away all, if you missed it-you missed a ball!

*Special thanks to Mona Edwards for making the club available to our members and all her hard work.

If you did miss this year’s party, please try to attend next year. People come from as far away as England (Angus Reid) just to attend this gala event. The word spreads fast that members of the Suncoast Mustang Club have fun!!!

Text Box: SMC Participates in the Toys for Tots Drive

Our club’s main charity, Toys for Tots, received lots of gifts from us this year.  A large number of members brought gifts to the Holiday Dinner or to one of the “collection sites”.   On Friday, December 14th, we were able to fill our cars with many great gifts for needy kids.  In addition to the individual members’ donations, Lucy and Jim Carroll and Bill Dellert each purchased about $150 worth of toys, using funds from the club’s treasury.

The turnout of cars was the largest ever. We assembled at Wayne’s shop to caravan over to Brandon, where WQYK’s Randy and Dave were holding their annual toy drive marathon.   We left as one large group, but were quickly broken up into small groups, because of heavy rush-hour traffic and those “wonderful” traffic lights.  Once on the Gandy Bridge, traffic really slowed because construction in Tampa allowed only one lane of cars to proceed.  We continued on; keeping in touch via our cell phones, as it started to sprinkle, then rain, then pour.  The rain got so heavy that Randy and Dave had to close up their open air broadcast and they made an appeal to SMC members not to come because the weather was so bad.  Most of us continued however, since the traffic was so sluggish and eventually the rain did slow up.  As we began arriving at Toys ‘R Us in Brandon, the rain had stopped and the Marines were happy to see us and collect our toys.  Randy Price was still there, and though he was off the air, he warmly greeted all the club members who braved the weather.  Randy, along with many others, admired our “fleet” of Mustangs of various styles and years.

Once all the toys were unloaded, we said our good-byes and proceeded to the nearby Smokey Bones Restaurant, where we enjoyed each other’s company and a great meal.

Thanks to all the club members who brought gifts and those who went or attempted to go.  This event is getting better each year.  It is nice to donate to a great cause and great to get our Mustangs on the road and assembled at one location (even with the rain).  The cars looked great, even as the rain drops bubbled up on their beautiful paint jobs.  If you weren’t able to be a part of this event, we hope you can participate next year.

Text Box: SMC Membership Renewal

It is once again time to renew your membership to SMC.  Dues will remain the same, $20.00 annually.  The pro-rated dues are only for new members, not for members who pay later in the year.  Along with paying your dues, it is very important that you completely fill out a membership application – even if everything is the same from last year.  The applications are important for our records.  Also, make sure you check off how you want your newsletter sent to you.   Receiving the newsletter via e-mail does save the club money, but if you prefer receiving it by mail, please indicate that on the application.

We are an official MCA sponsored club and it is important that we have as many MCA members as possible in our club.  Be sure to let us know if you belong to MCA (and if you don’t belong, please consider joining).  You may hand-deliver your application and dues to Bill Dellert at the SMC club meetings or mail to Bill at the address on the application.  Please do not send applications to the club’s post office box address. All 2007 members will continue to receive the newsletter through March; those who do not renew by that time will no longer be considered active members.

Warning – “New-Looking” older tires can Kill

If you have a classic Mustang that isn’t driven a lot, the tires don’t show much tread wear and so if they look good, “why mess with them?”  I found out that’s not a good idea, when a tire that looked fine, suddenly lost its tread on the interstate and I nearly lost control of my car.  Common sense should have told me that keeping these tires on the car for over ten years was asking for trouble.  All tires have “Date Codes” printed on them.  To find out when a tire was made; look at the sidewall for lettering that begins with “DOT”, it’s usually close to the rim.  After that, the last 4 digits will indicate the week of manufacture and the year of the manufacture.  For example:  2507 would mean the tire was built in the 25th week of the year (approximately the first week of July) of 2007.  Looking at the date code is a good idea when purchasing new tires also, especially if they will be mounted on a car that sits more than goes.  How long should tires last, most “experts” say 5 to maybe 6 years is a safe bet.  How old are your tires???

Text Box:  **************Help Wanted**************

Pony Tales is the Club’s newsletter.  The newsletter’s function is to help keep members in touch with what is going on in the club and with other Mustang-related subjects.  The newsletter is put together by the Editor,  but by definition an editor is supposed to prepare other persons’ writings for publication.  We are grateful to the members who have provided articles in the past, but we need help with articles from YOU.  Examples of things you could share include:

Your observation or participation in a recent car show or cruise-in; including about how many cars were there, SMC members who attended or participated, whether or not there was judging and if so who in the club received awards, and other things such as the setting, weather, interesting activities or vendors.

An “autobiography” about a car you own or owned.  How you got it, what you did to it , what your future plans are for it, or why you sold it.

A product or new device you discovered that will make car care or maintence easier.  Where you bought it, how much it cost, how do you use it, and what results did you get from it.

Technical articles about how to perform a repair or install a new item to your car.  Don’t let Wayne and Sherman have all the fun.  If you do something to your car and you’re proud of how you did it, share it with the rest of us.

A visit to a place that “car people” would enjoy visiting.  What it was, where it is, how much it cost, what you saw and did there.

Don’t worry if you aren’t the greatest speller or that you didn’t get an “A” in English Composition, the Editor’s job is to clean that stuff up.  Every time SMC members get together there are great stories told and great ideas shared.  Put your story in writing and let the entire club enjoy it.
