A Word From Wayne

Text Box:
Hello again!

This month’s hot topic of conversation is our upcoming Car Clinic. I always hear a lot of feedback from you guys saying you want more Mustang "tech" talks, so here is your chance to attend one. It is completely free and will be held at Restomod Plus (13730B - 50th Way N., Clearwater) on Saturday, July 14th at 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. Lunch and soft drinks will be provided. We already have 18 R.S.V.P., so it will probably be a good turn out. If you are planning to come, drop an e-mail to wayne@restomodplus.com. We will be talking about some restorations tips for the old cars and we will also have some advice on modifications to both old and new cars. With a "hands-on" atmosphere, we should be able to not only answer your questions about your projects, but we should be able to show you some things about it as well. Hopefully, everybody will bring their cars to show them off and it might make for some great group pictures. Please let me know if you plan to attend so we can have enough food and drinks. Don’t forget to bring a chair.

Speaking of upcoming events, at this month’s meeting we will have a guest speaker talking to us about crime prevention. He has a lot of helpful hints about identity theft and other types of crime. So don’t miss it. It will be on Monday, July 11 at AutoWay Ford, 2525 - 34 Street North, St. Petersburg, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

I would like to take this time to thank John Stockowski for once again setting up another great event for us. This past month’s meeting and cruise to Sonic Drive-in turned out to be another fun get-together for everyone. We turned a lot of heads while cruising in our Mustangs from Autoway in St. Pete to Sonic in Pinellas Park. Once there, everybody ate dinner and had a good time. The folks at Sonic treated us well with good food, fast service, and a group discount. We had a group trivia game and everybody was a winner, so the club bought desserts for all. Pictures of all the fun are on the website.

Suncoast Mustang Club

Meeting Minutes: June 11, 2007

The meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. by President Wayne Farnham at AutoWay Ford. The meeting’s agenda was brief, as club members planned to “cruise” to Sonic Drive-in in Pinellas Park.   Wayne reviewed the minutes of the previous board meeting  and discussed the schedule of events for the upcoming months (see our website for more details).  The location of the December dinner meeting is yet to be determined.

Alan Rice provided an update on Orrie Engle’s health condition.  Members are encouraged to keep him in our thoughts as he convalesces and to send cards and well wishes to his home address:  2678 Spyglass Drive, Clearwater, 33761-2742.

A request was made for members to submit newsletter articles, “AUTO-biographies” and other related information to the newsletter editor at jdellert121@hotmail.com.

New member, Joe Speakes was introduced and welcomed to the club.  Joe drives a ’07 white convertible.

At 7:40 p.m., club members returned to their vehicles to “cruise” to Sonic Drive-in, where the meeting continued with dinner and one of Wayne’s “world famous” trivia games.  Everyone was rewarded with dessert from the club’s treasury and the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Steve Hansen

Secretary

Al and Sue Clarke's '66 MUSTANG FASTBACK

I was not looking for a Mustang when the opportunity came along to acquire this one.  I had purchased a 1953 Buick Super 2-door hardtop in 1983, which I am still in the process of restoring.  In my spare time I had worked in a body shop that my brother-in-law Ed Ketcham owned.  He had a person working for him at that time who had bought this Mustang fastback for his wife.  But as some things in life go, other priorities took place over him restoring the Mustang.  A deal was made between Ed and this fellow, whose name escapes me, for Ed to take the Mustang and whatever parts that were purchased as payment of a debt to Ed.  Ed owed me money, so he asked me if I would like to have the Mustang and whatever parts that had been bought for payment of what he owed me.  I made a deal with Ed that if he painted the car and gave me what parts were with it, we had a deal.  The first paint job was one of the best I have seen Ed do, but unfortunately someone in the shop where the car was stored didn't realize that a damp rag with lacquer thinner laid on the hood would have an adverse effect on the paint.  Needless to say, Ed and I were both unhappy, but rather than paint just the hood, Ed agreed to paint the entire care car with the understanding that I would remove the car from the shop after it was finished and I agreed. I brought the car to my house along with some of the interior, a/c and whatever other parts were there.

Over a period of time I finished putting the car back together, including the a/c and some parts I had to make by hand. The engine seemed to run fine in the car when I got it, but always seemed to have low oil pressure.  Working on cars most of my life, instead of putting a manual oil pressure gauge on the engine, I decided to go ahead and have the engine rebuilt.  After having it rebuilt, I discovered I had the same low oil pressure on the gauge in the dash.  After a "light" came on, it came to me that I needed to use a manual gauge to check the oil pressure.  I did and the oil pressure was where it should have been.  Oh well, it does have a new engine and transmission!  A similar incident happened with the a/c.  I bench-tested the blower motor and it worked fine, but once installed in the car and hooked up with the freon, it makes a lot of noise on high speed fan. I will have to take it out again and change the case or fan motor.

The car has not been driven a lot since it was rebuilt.  It is a nice car, looks great, and if the battery is good it always starts up.  I would like to thank the following people for the assistance I received with this car: My brother-in-law, Ed Ketcham for painting and helping with the a/c; Sherman Bliss with much needed parts; and Bob Kellow for parts.

We are looking forward to driving the car more in the future. A dream of Sue's is to drive Route 66 in our '66 Mustang.  Like all clubs Sue and I have been in or now belong to, we find that you get out of them what you put into them.
