Meeting Minutes: June 11, 2007
The meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. by President Wayne Farnham at AutoWay Ford. The meeting’s agenda was brief, as club members planned to “cruise” to Sonic Drive-in in Pinellas Park. Wayne reviewed the minutes of the previous board meeting and discussed the schedule of events for the upcoming months (see our website for more details). The location of the December dinner meeting is yet to be determined.

AUTO-biography
Al and Sue Clarke's '66 MUSTANG FASTBACK
I was not looking for a Mustang when
the opportunity came along to acquire this one. I had purchased a 1953 Buick
Super 2-door hardtop in 1983, which I am still in the process of restoring. In
my spare time I had worked in a body shop that my brother-in-law Ed Ketcham owned.
He had a person working for him at that time who had bought this Mustang
fastback for his wife. But as some things in life go, other priorities took
place over him restoring the Mustang. A deal was made between Ed and this
fellow, whose name escapes me, for Ed to take the Mustang and whatever parts
that were purchased as payment of a debt to Ed. Ed owed me money, so he asked
me if I would like to have the Mustang and whatever parts that had been bought
for payment of what he owed me. I made a deal with Ed that if he painted the
car and gave me what parts were with it, we had a deal. The first paint job was
one of the best I have seen Ed do, but unfortunately someone in the shop where
the car was stored didn't realize that a damp rag with lacquer thinner laid on
the hood would have an adverse effect on the paint. Needless to say, Ed and I
were both unhappy, but rather than paint just the hood, Ed agreed to paint the
entire care car with the understanding that I would remove the car from the shop
after it was finished and I agreed. I brought the car to my house along with
some of the interior, a/c and whatever other parts were there.
Over a period of time I finished
putting the car back together, including the a/c and some parts I had to make by
hand. The engine seemed to run fine in the car when I got it, but always seemed
to have low oil pressure. Working on cars most of my life, instead of putting a
manual oil pressure gauge on the engine, I decided to go ahead and have the
engine rebuilt. After having it rebuilt, I discovered I had the same low oil
pressure on the gauge in the dash. After a "light" came on, it came to me that
I needed to use a manual gauge to check the oil pressure. I did and the oil
pressure was where it should have been. Oh well, it does have a new engine
and transmission! A similar incident happened with the a/c. I bench-tested the
blower motor and it worked fine, but once installed in the car and hooked up
with the freon, it makes a lot of noise on high speed fan. I will have to take
it out again and change the case or fan motor.
The car has not been driven a lot
since it was rebuilt. It is a nice car, looks great, and if the battery is good
it always starts up. I would like to thank the following people for the
assistance I received with this car: My brother-in-law, Ed Ketcham for
painting and helping with the a/c; Sherman Bliss with much needed parts; and Bob
Kellow for parts.
We are looking forward to driving the
car more in the future. A dream of Sue's is to drive Route 66 in our '66
Mustang. Like all clubs Sue and I have been in or now belong to, we find that
you get out of them what you put into them.
