A Word From Wayne

Hello again.

First things first, I want to thank everyone who participated in our club’s car show this past month. I want to especially thank all the people that worked so hard the day of the show with judging, parking, registration, raffle sales etc.  I know that without everyone’s assistance, however big or small, we could not pull this car show off.  So I want each and every one of you to take a minute and reach around and give yourself a pat on the back along with an “attaboy”.  After everything was said and done we netted almost one thousand dollars profit for the club.

Speaking of profits, a group of club members recently worked the Kruse Auction at the Tampa Fairgrounds.  We moved cars in and out of the building and helped behind the scenes to make the auction run smoothly.  For our help, they donated $750 to our club.  It is a little like work, but it is also very interesting to see and drive a variety of cars and to get a firsthand look on how an auction is run.  Thanks go out once again to all those who helped.

Moving along to current events, as you read this, the Great American Pony Drive is already under way again this year.  For those of you who do not know what this is, it is an event where a group of fellow Mustangers start at one point and caravan together to another point stopping along the way to visit car related sites and events.  Along the way, the caravan is often met by people in the local Mustang clubs of the area they travel through. Sometimes those local Mustangers will tag along with them even if it’s just for a short time.  Therefore, the caravan of Mustangs is constantly changing in size.  Having said that, this year’s drive is starting up in the Panhandle of Florida and it is zigzagging its way through the state for about 3 weeks.  They will be going right through our area and staying overnight in Tampa on Wednesday, May 7th.  They will be meeting with the Tampa Mustang Club for dinner that night, but the highlight of their entire trip will surely be their stop at RestoMod Plus on Thursday, May 8th.  Anyone wanting to join up with them on their route can get more information on www.ponydrive.us and of course everyone is welcome here on May 8th from 9:30 to noon.  At noon we will have lunch catered by Mikes Pizza and Deli. Bring your car and your appetite.  We will be having a couple of small discussions about restoring and modifying Mustangs, along with some helpful hints.

This month’s meeting will be held on Monday, May 12th at AutoWay Ford at 7:30.  We will have a “hands-on” discussion about common starting, running, and charging system problems.  Hope to see everyone there.

Thanks,

       Wayne Farnham

Meeting Minutes

April 14, 2008

The meeting called to order by President Wayne Farnham at 7:15p.m.  The “business” meeting was short since we were heading over to the Sonic to get some chow.  We briefly discussed our club’s Spring Fling Car Show and some valuable feedback was provided.  The show had a few glitches, but overall it was a success and those who attended had a good time.  Club members were asked to volunteer at the Kruse Auto Auction the following Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 18, 19, and 20.  A list was generated, the meeting was ajourned, and then we got in our cars and caravanned over to the Sonic.  Despite the cool temperatures, everyone enjoyed the food and socialized as we normally do.

On a personal note, I had the pleasure to work the Auction on Sunday and like last year it was a total blast.  You get to drive some awesome cars that normally you would never have the chance to drive.  My favorites were a 1954 Corvette, a 1970 454 Corvette, and a gorgeous 1973 Mach One.  If our club is lucky enough to be called on next year to help, I highly recommend that you volunteer.  It was a fun event and it earned our club $750 that went straight into the club treasury.

Don’t forget the May 12th  meeting  at AutoWay Ford at 7:30p.m.

Respectfully submitted

Secretary

To All SMC Members:

The 2008 SMC Spring Fling Car Show is now history.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those club members that put in countless hours behind the scenes that helped make this show a success.  I hate to name names, for fear that I will omit someone, but suffice it to say that everyone who helped did a great job.  I also want to thank the many members who contributed their time on the day of the show.  I was very impressed by the hard work and can-do attitude that all the club members exhibited on show day.  Anything that needed to be done was accomplished with great enthusiasm by everyone.

We should always remember that the people who come to the show and register their cars are the ones that we need to keep happy, so they will come back next year.  In talking to many entrants, I came away with the feeling that everyone enjoyed the show.  We tried to give away some extra trophies this year, so that more people went home happy.  We had 76 cars and gave away 50 trophies, which figures out to approximately 63 percent of registrants getting trophies.

The raffle crew did an excellent job selling tickets.  They sold a little over $400 worth of tickets, which I’m sure is an all time high.

We had an enormous amount of day of show entrants (29), and for the first time in many, many years, these cars would also be judged.  This put even more pressure on the judging team.  But, as always, John Moody came through for us, even though it may have added a few gray hairs.

Thank you, also, to the registration and raffle team, the parking guys and I can’t forget Al Clarke for making some waves and securing the park for us. (Hope your knee is better).

Once again, I want to thank everyone for coming together and making this a successful show.

Steve Hansen

Show Chairman
