A Word From Wayne
Hello again,
For those of you who think we just sit around during the summer because it’s too hot outside to do anything; think again. Last month’s August 11th meeting was held at Quaker Steak and Lube and we had one of the best turnouts all year. Almost everyone brought out their car and displayed it right out front of the “Lube”. All the Mustangs really looked sharp out there. Inside we all ate dinner, and then had a quick meeting.
The Grand Finale of the night was another round
of our near world famous game of “The Price is Right”. We put five car products
on a table along with five index cards, each with a dollar amount written on the
card. Everyone took turns arranging the card with a “price” on it to the car
product they thought would cost that much. It is surprisingly difficult and it
definitely stirs the crowd up. Club members Brian Johnson won the first round
and Tom O’Connor won the second round. I hope everyone had a fun time and thanks
to all who showed up and participated.
Then on Saturday August 16th we had our second
annual bowling night at Twedt’s Lanes in Largo. About 20 people showed
up this year and I think everyone had a great time. Highlights of the night had
to include Al Clarke bowling from a wheelchair and Jennifer Farnham beating her
dad. After a couple hours, we all went over to Sonny’s BBQ and ate dinner.
Once again thanks to all who came out and participated.
Speaking of Thank You’s for participation, I want to thank our Vice President John Stockowski for setting up all these events. John always comes through when it comes to all the behind the scenes work involved in arranging these little get togethers! Thanks John!!!
This month’s meeting will be held back at AutoWay Ford on Monday, September 8th at 7:30. We will be having a demonstration on car care products. Don’t miss this one.
See you there,
Wayne Farnham

Quaker Steak and Lube
The August meeting was held at Quaker Steak and Lube on August 11, 2008. We had a very good turnout for the meeting, 42 people came out and there were 21 Mustangs to look at. I think everyone had a good time, the food was good and the service was alright.
After everyone finished eating, our fun loving President Wayne Farnham had a “Price is Right” game for everyone to try their hand at. The object was to match the correct price with the correct product. It’s not as easy as you might think. Round one went to Brian Johnson who opted for door number one and came out with a bag of candy bars. Yeah.
The second round was won by Tom O’Connor who managed to put the correct prices on the corresponding items. A lot of fun was had by all especially all of us audience members who were giving advice on the right price of the items (Just like the audience on the TV show.). Thanks to Wayne and his daughter, Jennifer for the great games.
Hope everyone had fun at the bowling extravaganza, now was that on Saturday night or Sunday night? Just kidding Bill. (Yes, Steve & everyone else I goofed – Sorry, Bill)
Next meeting is at AutoWay Ford. Be there or be square.
Respectfully submitted.

My Autobiography by Tony Tona
The Gray Primer Mustang
My story began when I was a teen peering at a 1965 baby blue Mustang coupe. I was captivated by this car on the sales lot. I brought my Dad along to help me make a practical decision, so this car did not make the practical car list to consider. “Tired Iron son” is what I was told. Really, who knew how popular these cars would become so I settled for a Chevy Monza…
A couple of years went by and once again, on a car lot my father and I stood looking at what seemed to be the hottest car I had ever seen in my life…you guessed it, a Mustang! This was a 71 Mach 1 Mustang, trimmed with racing strips. We looked inside and it looked like a mess. “The tires are bald and this car has been run hard. Not a good choice.” I heeded that advice from my father and the practical side of me knows it was the right choice…but the love affair could not be stopped.
Early in my marriage I stopped 2 different times and looked at Mach 1 Mustangs, test drove them but neither seemed like the sensible decision. We were dirt poor and I had to have a reliable car, not a toy that sometimes worked and sometimes did not.
Last year, for the first time in quite a while I began to think about that Mustang again. This time it seemed to make sense. My company supplied a car for me; so in essence, I only owned one car, my wives. For the first time in 20 plus years I could buy the dream car I have always wanted. It sounded simple enough but there was one thing that seemed to put a bump in the road. A budget! My budget was low and everything I looked at in my budget was junk. Car after car had this problem and that problem. Finally, I gave up. I said a prayer and put it into God’s hands. This car would have to be for sale very close by, be mechanically sound because I don’t know how to fix cars and there was no money in the budget to do so.
This year God decided to answer my prayer. It was February the month of my birthday and my wife came home and said her and my younger son saw as Mustang in primer on the corner up the street for sale. Quite frankly, I had stopped looking for Mustangs so this caught me by surprise. I thought, just for giggles we will go look at it and then come home because for sure it would not be in my budget even in primer! Well, I couldn’t believe it! We got up there and sure enough it looked rough. It was a 1967 Mustang Coupe and even though the interior looked very old, everything was in it! I lifted the hood and I saw the most beautiful engine…nothing like the junk I had looked at in the past…it looked huge and brand new! I begin to read the list of items, “rebuilt 351 Windsor 60 bore, rebuilt C4 transmission with shift kit, HP cam, new this, new that…wow! Then I looked at the price. It was in my budget. I couldn’t believe it! I called the number and the man was there within minutes. My wife was saying, “You got to buy this!” My wife! That’s unbelievable. I took it up the street and it sounded so awesome. It purred like a kitten with its dual exhausts. I come back from the test drive and walk over to the car where my wife was waiting and someone else pulls up. She is almost yelling, “Don’t let that person buy it! You go over there and tell him you want it!” Now I will tell you I was dumb struck. I stepped over and after he had said that I would have to buy it out and out, no down payment to hold it, he for some reason changed his mind and says to me, “You seem like an honest guy. I will drive it back to my house (it was Saturday), take the “for sale” sign off and you can pick it up Monday.”
I called my friend that deals in classic cars and my brother-in-law who is a mechanic and asked if they could stop by and check the car out. Both of them said that mechanically, you’re good to go. So, even though I was supposed to be out of town that Monday, God took care of that for me as well. My travel plans were changed, I had no control over it, and I found myself going to the bank and the car was delivered to my driveway that day. How about that! Prayer works! On February 25, 2008 I became the proud owner of a classic car, a 1967 Mustang Coupe that I could drive with no worries and work on the body work at my own pace.
The first thing I did was to join the Suncoast Mustang Club where I met Wayne for the first time. He was awesome and I knew this would be a great club. My Mustang was still in primer when Wayne convinced me to enter the “Work in Progress” category of our Spring Fling Mustang show. Boy am I glad I listen to Wayne. My Dad and I, yes old “Tired Iron” himself, had a blast during the show, talking with folks, seeing other cars and seeing my old Mustang in primer sitting next to some of the hottest Mustangs I have seen in my life! I will be honest with you, I felt very funny that day, kind of out of place but it was all worth wild when they called my name and awarded a trophy for my class, “Work in Progress” So I owned my first Mustang, entered my first car show and won my first trophy in that show all within 3 months! Wow, this car has really been a blessing.
I have so enjoyed getting to know everybody in the Suncoast Mustang Club. What a great group of folks. They have been so gracious to accept me and my gray primered Mustang dream. Thanks guys. And thank you to answered prayers!
