A Word From Wayne

Wayne Farnham, President
Hello again.
Once again John Stockowski set up yet another great event for the Suncoast Mustang Club. It all started with a brief meeting at our normal meeting place, Autoway Ford (2525 34th St. N.). We discussed our current events calendar for the remainder of the year, and then we adjourned the meeting. We all hopped in our cars and cruised over to the Sonic on 49th street and 78th Ave. in Pinellas Park. We were met at Sonic with our name displayed on the marquee out front. We put our cars on display while we all enjoyed the great food and desserts Sonic had to offer. If anybody has never been there, you really need to put it on your list of things to do. The food is really good and the atmosphere is kind of neat, too. It really reminds you of an old fashion drive-in restaurant. The girls even serve you on roller skates. After everyone ate, Bill Dellert organized another round of his now “nearly world famous” trivia game for cash money. Winners this time included Al Clarke, Sherman Bliss, John Moody, and Steve DiCenso. We had approximately 30 people attend, and I believe a great time was had by all. Thanks again to John for setting it all up, but an even more special thanks go out to all who participated. Pictures of the event can be seen on the website.
The Mustang Club of Tampa pulled off another extraordinary car show at MOSI on October 14th. They somehow scheduled another sunshiny day for everyone to enjoy. Over 250 cars came. There was just about every type of Mustang represented, both old and new. Also, they had a small selection of vendors. During the show you could take a break from all the beautiful weather, and go inside to MOSI and look at all their exhibits. The theme in MOSI was weather, and had shows for hurricanes, tornados, wildfires, and earthquakes. Everyone I spoke with had a great time and can't wait until next year to see if it gets even better!!!
Also, this is your last reminder about this weekend’s picnic at Philippe Park on Nov. 11. Please RSVP with Bill Dellert to let us know how many are coming. As usual we will supply hamburgers, hot dogs and sodas. To round out the menu, we ask that you bring a covered dish. We usually have a very good time just getting together and relaxing, so come on out and join us. We also will have some games to entertain us.
The meeting will still be at Autoway on Monday Nov. 13 at 7:30. See you there.

Memoirs of a
Mustanger

As many of you know, Jim and Lucy Carroll took a road trip this fall. Jim shares a few pages from his travel journal…
This year’s journey started in "LAS VEGAS$$$$$$$$. Because of the distance to Las Vegas, we decided to fly and then rent a Mustang. It is not quite the same as driving your own car, but it certainly saved wear and tear on our personal Mustangs. We circled the wagons with the other Pony Drivers, many of whom were friends from previous Pony Drives and on September 15 we headed for California. But first we had to fix a pesky flat tire. I had picked up a huge bolt and the tire was getting pretty mushy. It took Hertz more than four hours to get us back on the road. Undaunted, we set out to catch the rest of the herd, finally meeting up with them just as they were pulling in to a cruise-in sponsored by the Woodland Hills Mustang Club. Great timing!
We cruised around the L.A. area for the next two days taking in the sites; the Malibu shoreline, Santa Monica Pier, Lunch at Bubba Gump’s Shrimp Co. and of course the La Brea Tar Pits (don't ask!). Then it was up the picturesque Pacific Coast Hwy. with stops in the Danish Village of Solvang, Hearst Castle at San Simeon, Carmel, and Monterey. The next day found us in San Jose for a tour of the famous Winchester Mystery House built by the heiress to the repeating rifle fortune. We traveled on to Concord, to meet up with the Diablo Valley Mustang Association for a great BBQ dinner, wonderful people and warm hospitality.
Up early the next morning, we were off to Sebastopol and the Iron Horse Winery in the beautiful Sonoma Valley. We spent about an hour there, but because we were on the road, we did little wine tasting. What a shame! The Pony Drive then headed for the coast and Bodega Bay, where we had lunch. You may recall that the movie "The Birds" was filmed there. Not much has happened there since, but that is part of its charm. The afternoon saw us traveling through the mountains to Clearlake in the Napa Valley. After dinner we all gathered on the motel balcony for one of our now famous Pony Drive parties. It was then that a small group of us decided to take a side trip over to Cloverdale and visit with my daughter and son-in-law for the weekend. We hooked up with the rest of the Pony Drive in San Francisco where we took in the sites and sounds of this great city including Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, an unforgettable ride in a 1955 shiny red Mack Fire truck, and the top of Telegraph Hill for the sunset.
Our next stop was Yosemite National Park. Think giant Sequoias, beautiful waterfalls, and some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. We spent most of the day there and were still reluctant to leave but our next motel was in Lake Tahoe. We traveled through Sutter Creek and Placerville of Gold Rush fame and arrived late in Lake Tahoe. Two days were spent in Tahoe and we didn't even go to the casinos. A cruise on a paddle steamer on the lake and a gondola ride to the 10,000 ft. summit of one of the high mountains were highlights of our days. Upon leaving Tahoe, our group split again, some going down the Extraterrestrial Hwy and the rest of us heading for Death Valley. We had done the ET Hwy on an earlier Pony Drive, so we opted for Death Valley. What a great experience, 242 feet below sea level, 120 degrees! But unbelievably beautiful! The last time I was that far below sea level, I was in a submarine. That night we joined up with the rest of the group in Tonopah. The next time someone says "Out in the middle of nowhere", think Tonopah. Up early again, we left Tonopah at the “crack of ten”. The last leg of our odyssey would take us through beautiful mountains and high desert to towns like Pahrump and on into Las Vegas again for the MCA National Show put on by the Las Vegas Mustang Club at the famous Star Dust Hotel and Casino. We attended the show on Saturday and Sunday and flew home on the "red eye" that night with a bunch of great memories.
We are already looking forward to Pony Drive '07 in the northeast!

SPOTLIGHT
ON OUR MEMBERS
The Suncoast Mustang Club would like to welcome new members Terry and Kelly Worthington. Terry shares a little about himself…
I was born in Greenup, Kentucky but moved with the family back in June of 1968 to St. Petersburg. It was that year at the start of second grade that I met Wayne Farnham.
My dad was always into cars but was a little lazy so my brothers and I did most of the work. We were really into Corvairs and at one time had acquired about 14. My first car that I could actually drive was a 68 Torino GT. This began my love for Fords. By the time I was 18 I had already owned seven 70 & 71 Torino GT’s.
I met my darling wife Kelly in February of 1980. She had only been in Florida for about a year after her move from Frankenmuth, Michigan. We were married in February of 1985. We have two wonderful kids, Courtney 20 and Justin 19. They also are big car fans.
We currently have the following cars:
2006 Corvette Coupe
2006 Mustang GT Convertible (The Black one on Wayne’s Website)
2006 Mustang GT Coupe (Blue)
2006 F150 Harley Davidson
2005 F250 Harley Davidson 4 X 4
2004 Lightning Pickup
2003 Mustang Cobra Coupe
1988 BMW 635Csi
1968 Austin Mini
I’m waiting for the prices to drop on the new Shelby and hoping for a new SVT Lightning. I would like to have Wayne do a complete “restomod” on a 65 or 66 Mustang Coupe. And someday I would like to have a Ford GT.
Thanks
Terry L Worthington
